This is another way to approach rendering. First I sketched the creature in pencil, and then scanned it, traced it with the pen tool, and started filling it with color and details. I want to try and make as 3D as possible, but my skills are still pretty limited. So, here it is so far....

Can you use a paint program (raster, pixel) to do the sketch? Then transfer that to your CAD (vector) app, and use it as the basis for what you have done?
One of the main things I think that is so different about painting with the computer is where my hand is where the image appears on my drawing surface (the screen?). It takes quite some time to get used to, as do different pointing devices. (tablet/mouse etc.)

Hi, thanks for asking, Yes, you can transfer a pixel image to a vector program, but it must be changed to paths from pixels. The best way is to use the pen tool and trace the image on a separate layer, and then you can delete or hide the original drawing. There is also "live Trace" in illustrator, that automatically traces for you, but I haven't used that enough to comment.
I agree with you on the challenge of getting used to the indirect method of using a tablet , and your drawing appears up on the screen. I am almost liking it at this point! Wacom has a new product that combines the tablet with a monitor, so you are drawing directly on the screen. It's a bit pricey....
