beasties

Finally! A February entry. I have been swamped with work, which is a good thing. So, while slaving away in the studio, I kept thinking about this sketchbook and how I haven't made any entries lately. Looking around me, I thought,"I'll just scan in some of the stuff on the walls..." So, here are two drawings. Both are are small pencil studies on clayboard. A great surface, but not much tooth, which means I can't build up layers of linework. I did the first drawing from photo reference, and then the beastman followed shortly after.

Hey Jackie! These are the best.I'm finding in my own art that it is necessary to do both 'the painting' as well as 'the mythology' I've tried for years to merge them but they insist on not being mutually soluble.'The mythology' informs my consciousness whilst 'the painting' is a pleasure of my subconscious/chance. I think you've got the same thing going on here: not so much with your illustration and your beasties but with your painting(land and seascapes particularly) and your beasties. I'm happy to be free of the constraint of one style . I think it has something to do w the zeitgeist of our time. The computer(non essential free time technology) pulls away from the reality of our existence-softens our sense of reality, takes us away from the natural patterns of life. We need a connection to myth-patterned storytelling. But we also need to experience pure self expression once all our ducks are lined up....and then there's making art for nece$$ity which is another matter all together! Congratulations for doing it all and well.
